Organizational Climate Description Questionnaire – Rutgers Elementary (OCDQ-RE)

The OCDQ-RE measures the organisational climate of elementary schools through teachers’ descriptions of everyday behaviour among staff and the principal. It is a revision of the original OCDQ for use in elementary schools. Its 42 statements are rated on a four-point scale from ‘rarely occurs’ to ‘very frequently occurs’, and they form six subtests: three describe the principal (supportive, directive and restrictive behaviour) and three describe teachers (collegial, intimate and disengaged behaviour).

The school, not the individual teacher, is the unit of analysis. Item responses are averaged across the staff, summed into subtest scores and converted to standardised scores with a mean of 500, using normative data from New Jersey schools. Two openness indices, one for the principal and one for teachers, are then derived. Hoy’s website provides the questionnaire and scoring directions for download, and administration takes under ten minutes. Parallel versions exist for middle (OCDQ-RM) and secondary (OCDQ-RS) schools.
