Maslach Burnout Inventory – Educators Survey (MBI-ES)

The MBI-ES is the version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory written for people who work in education, including teachers, administrators and support staff. Its 22 items describe feelings about work, and respondents indicate how often they experience each one on a seven-point frequency scale, from never to every day. The items form three scales: emotional exhaustion (nine items), depersonalisation (five items) and personal accomplishment (eight items).

The three scores are reported separately rather than summed into a single burnout total, with lower personal accomplishment read in the direction of burnout. The inventory is a commercial product. Mind Garden sells the manual and either per-respondent licences to reproduce or administer the form, or online hosting with scoring reports, so purchase is needed before data collection. A Turkish version tested with 760 classroom teachers in Ankara kept the original three-factor structure (İnce & Şahin, 2015).
