The National Teacher and Principal Survey is a nationally representative sample survey of public and private elementary and secondary schools in the United States. It was redesigned from the Schools and Staffing Survey (SASS), which ran from 1987–88 to 2011–12, and has been administered in 2015–16, 2017–18 and 2020–21, with a further round collected in 2023–24. Linked school, principal and teacher questionnaires cover topics such as principals’ education, experience, salary and job satisfaction, and teachers’ certification and working conditions. Follow-up surveys track principal and teacher attrition and mobility.
NTPS is a US survey, so Türkiye does not take part, although its instruments are a useful reference for researchers designing national surveys of school staff. There are no public-use NTPS data files. Researchers can apply for restricted-use files through the NCES licensing system, or use DataLab to build tables and regressions without a licence. Sampling and replicate weights are provided, and the NCES First Look reports give an overview of each round.
