OECD Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS)

TALIS is the OECD’s international survey of teachers and school principals, conducted in 2008, 2013, 2018 and 2024. Lower secondary schools form the core population, and countries may add samples at primary and upper secondary level. The principal questionnaire deals with leadership activities, school autonomy, resources, school climate and staff appraisal; the teacher questionnaire asks about professional development, collaboration, feedback, self-efficacy and job satisfaction. Because teachers are sampled within the same schools as their principals, researchers can set principals’ accounts of leadership alongside teachers’ reports of their working conditions.

Türkiye took part in 2008, 2018 and 2024 but not in 2013. According to the Ministry of National Education, it joined TALIS 2024 at primary, lower secondary and upper secondary level, and in the early childhood strand. Analyses should use the final sampling weights together with the replicate weights supplied for variance estimation; the IEA IDB Analyzer and the R package EdSurvey can both read TALIS files. Many attitudes are reported as scaled indices, so the technical report should be consulted on their cross-country comparability before countries are compared.
