Omnibus T-Scale

The Omnibus T-Scale is a short measure of faculty trust, meaning the collective trust that a school’s teachers place in different referents. The current version has 26 Likert-type items in three subscales: trust in the principal (eight items), trust in colleagues (eight items) and trust in clients (ten items), where clients refers to students and parents together.

Teachers are the respondents, but the scores describe the school. Item responses are averaged across the staff, and five items (one in the colleagues subscale, three in the principal subscale and one in the clients subscale) are reverse scored before subscale scores are calculated. Hoy’s website sets out which items belong to each subscale and provides the scale itself as a downloadable file. Because the scores are aggregated, the school rather than the individual teacher is the proper unit of analysis, and researchers need enough respondents per school for the means to be meaningful.
